10 more empty frames, quite a find for a day. Frames have become starting points for new works. They give a pretty good definition about size and position and as we find them along our roads they carry some history within them. They can be quite influential.

Today we went treasure hunting. After we discovered that our favorite charity shop closed forever, we run into a great fleamarket (with a fantastic cheesebus) just around the corner. Then on to the next, with a small detour by the sea (it is striking, what an obligation this is, and what a sure way to encounter tourism, a very weird phenomena!).

We are heading north again and are looking forward very much to settling down for some days!

Ha Ha, Portomaggiore... if you follow this blog you know that this was the destination today. But we remembered that driving is a long Zen practice about moving slow and comfortably, getting lost and being found by places.

It is great to be out here! The beginning of a 6 months journey is (still) an unpredictable time. Will the world treat us well? Will we be lucky? Will The Bus reliably carry us through all the potholes?

Every afternoon when we finish with that Zen and we look for a place for the evening and the night, uncertainty comes creeping back. It doesn't look welcoming around here, we get lost, The Bus has to climb up some steep and scary hills, and it's getting late. And the world winks and says: There it is, the next incredible place to stay.

Feels like we are on the right track! And Portamaggiore still will be there tomorrow. And the day after...

Internet on the road is a blessing. Sometimes we find ourselves watching the slow upload of a picture with growing excitement or - as tonight - a long series of painful ups and downs. Who will win?

The Nomadic Village is on the 2nd subleg of it's first leg; we left our first meeting point at Oscar's and we are heading south. Destination: That amazing charity shop in Portomaggiore. Later this week we want to retreat to a good place and stay for a week. We'll get into some work and, if weather permits, up into the air.

We are very happy that our path crosses with Andrew & Caitlin Webb-Ellis. They can't be with us this year for the trip, but still they are the first Nomadic Village artists we meet, as they just have a short break from working at the Venice Biennale.

Andrew and Cailtin are UK based performers and film makers who live in their van „Mistress Enid Abbott“ full time. Spending time with them here in Valbruna is a great pleasure!

This occasion called for some pictures and some cake. The Captain pulled out his camera and Tina made our favorite chocolate cake (the main reason we had to get an oven).

If you feel like baking yourself ... here’s the recipe (amounts for 4 servings):

 

150g butter - 150g chocolate - 80g baking sugar - 30 g flour

3 eggs - whip foamy

melt butter and chocolate on boiling water

add sugar - add flour - mix eggs with rest

fill in forms - 200°C - app. 15 min. - tataa... the cake should be half baked with a liquid center!

Yesterday the Nomadic Village 2015 officially started. After a very demanding time of preparation we couldn't be more happy to settle in Valbruna in northern Italy at our friend Oscar's property. Oscar is restoring wooden ships in the middle of the mountains.

We travel with the biggest set up since the beginning of the project, and 14 meters on the road are a challenge; 17 kph uphill are quite a good zen practice. We hope that our latest addition, the Galeria Nowhere Caravan, will be filled with works by this year's artists during the next months, besides already being a great place to sit, talk and have coffee and cake.

Soon we will turn a bit more towards south, but no big detours; the first Nomadic Village of this year is starting in Cerkno/Slovenia in less than 3 weeks, and we are looking forward very much to meeting some of you there.

basic funding advice

Funding, some basic ideas (if you are rather new to it):

Go and apply to your country's arts council. Try to show your face there. Make the project description the way you actually want to do it. Writing a concept just to please the funding jury usually doesn't work.

Once you have this concept, it's going to get 'easier', you can send it all around, but try not to spam!

Contact (phone) your embassies in the countries you will be travelling to, ask if they do support 'their' artists.

Check the Roberto Cimetta Fund and the S.T.E.P. beyond fund. You might not travel to and from the eligible areas though.

Equipment: Cash-less funding might be the most feasible; if you have a nice concept you are ready to ask for a camera, a projector & co... Contact the resp. companies.

In general, don't expect too much, lower your expectations. If you manage to find 3000 EUR, congrats! Usually your first effort will rather result in 0 (sorry to be realistic). I always make sure to have a plan B that allows me to do the project even if I don't get funded.
