return

our homebase, Dreistetten, Austria
We managed to return back home and what's the prominent feeling? We want to return to so many places!

The longest itinerary in years brought us to a load of amazing people and places. We still can't believe the plentitude of intense experiences, strong impressions, great surprises and gratifying activities we have been through; how uplifting it can be to meet strangers and become friends; in how many ways our core interest is interpreted by different artists; how nice it is to have a bit of soap opera of people's drama along the way, but also a distraction.

It is reassuring how our grand set up held together. Only two small fixes on appr. 4000 km, and the big break down only happened when we arrived back in the garden at our homebase. Nice vehicles!

Now it is time to take that huge amount of inspiration and look ahead. We will make a final exhibition at the end of the coming Nomadic Village, and take it on a tour through Austria. We'll work our view of the plentitude of impressions into an exhibition tinski and the Captain are having in Vienna in December. And we'll happily plan a future in which the Nomadic Village will return to:

-small but dangers and CMAK in Cerkno
-Žiga and the fantastic location at the abandoned pool in Vrhnika
-Srdjan andBiljana, and their tranquil garden in Subotica
-KleinHouse, also Subotica
-finally Art Klinika, maybe we'll just illegally exhibit in Novi Sad's public space
-a thousand places and people in Romania we didn't have enough time to stay
 with
-Conny in Wurmloch who, like so many other people in Romania, made us feel
 welcome
-Mircea, Crinu and all the other pilots from Brasov
-Ulric, we'll meet in Amstelveen soon
-Lis, with whom we are sure our paths will cross again. And again.
-Francisca, our first artist in a mobile residency, once we find a way to go to
 Chile
-Andrew and Caitlin, who just got themselves a mini coach!

Thanks for being on the road with us! We are off now for the final Nomadic Village on Hohe Wand. Hooray!

nomadic village workshop, talk and discussion @ cmak

the captain on his way to cmak

for Wednesday Nomadic Village brought two small programs to CMAK:

Captain Klaus on freestyle analog colour-photography
We took a group portrait of all the attendends with an old school wooden large format camera and
developed the colour negative with a very simple set up.
The aim of this performance is to show that it can be quite simple to work on film, even in colour.
In the next days, Captain Klaus will make a print of the negative in his mini mini darkroom in the caravan.
Everybody is invited to drop by and have a look and an introduction to printing.

Anna Lipphardt on Artists and Mobility in Europe
From fighting for freedom of movement and expression to paving the way for neo-liberalism.
followed by a short introduction to the Nomadic Village by Captain Klaus
followed by a very interesting discussion about the theme: To what extend we are part of these dynamics, and how we can counteract them?
introducing the magic of a large format camera
the magic
quick & dirty developement set up
and voila, the negative
very interesting discussion with anna lipphardt, small but dangers and cmak

another meeting in Valbruna & getting to know Cerkno

Cerkno! We arrived, it is not like expected. More soon.....

Nomadic Village left Valbruna after a great and inspiring meeting with Heidi Sepällä and Andi Pils, who are also on their way to the first Village starting on thursday. They are great! Immediately their projection set-up was out and on, and they pursued their quest of putting the world in a different light. Reward was a fantastic diner in the Galeria Nowhere.

first circle completed & next one to go

During leg 01 of our trip we completed a circle through northern Italy, discovered new Places to Stay and visited old ones, and got our GPS tracking to work, which will become a central tool for the future Nomadic Village. We made the acquaintance of two likeminded people, Günter and Barbara, who spend most of their lives on the road in their Volkswagen van pursuing their sports- and arts-interests. They also offer great adventures (here's their homepage in german)!

The Captain got on with his portrait work and spend some good time up in the air, while Tina worked on a graphic job that might pay for our broken alternator. Nomadic Village is now back at Oscar's Segheria picking up the Galeria Nowhere Caravan (travelling without it felt very light and easy, but we did miss the great extras it brings, like an oven, central heating). On sunday it's off for Cerkno, location for the first Village (see poster above).

We are also looking forward to meeting artists Andi Pils & Heidi Seppälä and their project 'In Different Light' tomorrow evening, and to their first stories fresh from the road (along with some trouts fresh from the lake).

call for proposals 2015

We are happy to once again:

Call for Proposals Nomadic Village 2015, May - August

Northern Italy, Cerkno/Slovenia, Northern Balkans, Sofia/Bulgaria, Austria

Deadline for applications: 30th of January 2015!

Since 2009 the Nomadic Village has been a 2 weeks annual settlement of artists on the road. In 2015 it will become a swarm of people on the move for 4 months, travelling across several European countries and stopping along the way to establish 3 different Villages. The artists on the road are invited to propose projects for the entire trip, or parts of it. They will determine their own travelling schedules and use GPS tracking devices to create spontaneous meetings on the road. The Villages are conceived as meeting points as well as production and presentation opportunities.

For 2015, all the artists in charge of projects should be equipped with mobile Internet, and will be asked to update their whereabouts daily. Participants will have to mark the good spots to stay, document them and exchange with the other artists on the road. These exchanges will create a map that will expand over the years and will be provided to the Nomadic Village participants of future editions.

If you are interested in becoming part of it, please check the detailed CALL FOR PROPOSALS.
